Health officials have confirmed that a 25-year-old man has tested positive for the Wuhan coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases in Hong Kong to 18.
In a statement published last night, the Centre for Health Protection said the latest patient lives on Mau Tau Wai Road in To Kwa Wan. He developed a fever on Jan. 28, and a day later, went to Hong Kong Baptist Hospital with a cough, runny nose, and diarrhea.
He was discharged, but returned to the same hospital on Monday, and was then referred to the Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment, and subsequently tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
CHP says the patient didn’t travel outside Hong Kong, meaning that the virus was locally transmitted. The patient’s wife has been sent to a quarantine center, and the taxi driver that drove him from Hong Kong Baptist Hospital to the Prince of Wales Hospital at around 2pm on Monday has been urged to call the CHP hotline.
The announcement of the latest case comes less than 24 hours after authorities confirmed that two other people in their 60s had contracted the mysterious virus locally, and that a 39-year-old man with the virus had become the first person in the city to die from it.
One of those new patients, a 64-year-old shop owner referred to as “case 16,” had apparently continued to go to work at her boutique clothing store, Fresh Up in the Prudential Centre in Jordan, despite feeling sick.
Shortly after the information was disclosed, personnel in protective gear were seen inside the mall disinfecting the area, Ming Pao reports.

RTHK also reported that she lives at the Celestial Heights apartment complex in Ho Man Tin with her son, a daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, and a domestic worker. All of them have been quarantined.
The outlet reports that the wife and daughter of the 60-year-old retiree known as “case 17” have also been quarantined.
