Korea Times photographer Choi Won-suk’s photos of the anti-China protests in Hong Kong were selected as among the best pictures of 2019, the Korea Press Photographers’ Association (KPPA) said Wednesday.
His 20-image collection ― “Free Hong Kong” ― won the annual contest’s pictorial narrative category. There are 11 categories in the contest.
Choi visited Hong Kong three times at the height of the anti-China movement ― in July, August and September ― to capture the fury and resistance of protesters, the bloody crackdown by authorities and the destruction and scars their head-on clash left.
The KPPA said this year’s winners were selected through a “fair, strict and transparent” assessment by senior KPPA members and external photo experts, with 500 images submitted from newspapers and news agencies across the country.
Choi’s collection will be on display at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul from March 18 to 31, along with other award-winning photos.
